Fresenius Neglected to Warn Others of the Potential Deadly Problem
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received evidence that the manufacturer of GranuFlo was aware of a serious problem with how the powder was being mixed and administered to dialysis patients. A November 4, 2011 internal memo issued by the German manufacturer, Fresenius was issued to the physicians and clinics associated with FMC. Unfortunately, this important information was not shared with every facility that uses the product and with the FDA. The memo warned of a significantly increased risk of cardiac arrest and death among patients receiving hemodialysis treatments with GranuFlo.
In March, 2012, the FDA received a leaked copy of the memo and began an investigation on GranuFlo. At that time, after receiving an inquiry from the FDA about GranuFlo, FMC notified non-FMC physicians and clinics about the possible risks with GranuFlo use. The FDA recalled GranuFlo on June 27, 2012, several months after Fresenius was aware of the serious side effects.

All had six times higher levels of pre-dialysis bicarbonate levels apparently caused by GranuFlo.
